Fireworks at English Bay

Date: Friday July 28th, 2006
Location: Vancouver

On Wednesday, many students took the evening to enjoy the Celebration of Light at English Bay. The annual competition is one of the most attended events in Canada.

Even as we met at the school and began the walk to Sunset Beach, it was obvious just how big this event is. The roads were closed to all traffic except the crowds of people going to watch the show. As we neared the Beach, the streets were full of people. Thousands upon thousands lined the Bay. Every 15 minutes a loud boom could be heard as the barge launched fireworks to mark the time. Each time, a cheer would rise from the crowd.

The actual show was spectacular. I go every year to watch the display, and every year is amazing and unique. Italy put on a very entertaining show with fireworks ranging from the small sparklers to the loudest, biggest fireworks I have ever seen.

After the show came the tricky task of getting home. Despite the crowds i escaped on good time, although?I think alot of students may have stayed downtown later.

If you missed the show, there are 3 more chances! Saturday is China's performance.

River Rafting

Date: Tuesday July 25th, 2006
Location: Vancouver

This weekend, several students had the opportunity to go on a river rafting trip to Chilliwack river. When?I told people about this activity, it seemed many were worried about the price ($115) but after talking to a few students, it seems the trip was well worth it.

Those on the trip were given a choice between two paths, one easier and one more challenging. Besides the rafting (which?I heard was very fun) they also got to try cliff jumping into the water. Even though it was very cold water and everyone got soaked, everyone that I talked to enjoyed the trip. Students said they had tons of fun.

If you didnt make it this time, dont worry! There will be one more rafting trip in August. I'm sure we will also see some students return for a second dose of the river.

Beach Days

Date: Tuesday July 11th, 2006
Location: Vancouver

Last Friday we headed down to English Bay for the first Beach Day of July. After setting up all the equipment, the students arrived and the games began! Although I did see a football being thrown around, the big games where soccer and volleyball. I took part in?the volleyball and found that I am really out of practise! The game went strong for hours, and the soccer game lasted even longer.

Not everyone decided to go for sports, as I saw a small crowd lying around suntanning. Whatever they were doing, everyone seemed to be having a great time.

This week we will?have another?Beach Day, including volleyball and soccer. If you didnt make it last week, come and see! Hope to see everyone else there once again.

Location: Vancouver

We went for lunch this week to have a little bit of variation in our dinner nights. Shabusen on Granville street was our place to be for the?Friday afternoon. Shabusen organised us a private room with a round table for all the 13 of us. The concept was, pay one price and eat as much sushi and meat (Korean BBQ) as you can. Fortunally we had some people who were very familiar with this kind of food and ordered for everbody!! The food kept coming and coming and at one point i thought ; we are never EVER going to finish this!! We didn't give up and ate everything!! It was truly delicious!! I'm pretty sure too that nobody ate dinner that night after such a big and great lunch!! Pictures are coming!!

Curling

Date: Tuesday March 28th, 2006
Location: Vancouver

LSI 'S? CURLING?? ?TEAM!!

Curling, something completely new for everybody who was?at the Vancouver Curling Club on Saturday night. We started of with some lessons from a very experienced curling player. Curling is definitely not as easy as it looks like! After falling down on the ice a couple of times, everybody was able to actually curl!! We divided the group in 2 to play our very first Curling Game. Team 1 : Micheal, Taeko, Yasuna, Jeff and Stefano. Team 2: Chiara, Yoko, Karin, Colin and Juliette. Team 1 won the first round but team 2 didn't stay behind and won the second game. Curling makes you tired so it was time for some?Pizza and waching the hockeygame ( YES we're becoming real Canadians!)?

Only we were all so excited about the?curling that we?went back on the ice in?a break?of the?hockeygame. The score was 2-2....The last game was the winning one! It was close till the end but team 2 was just a little bit better and won the last game!!!

Experience thanks for organizing this fun night!

Granville Island Brewery

Date: Monday March 13th, 2006
Location: Vancouver

It was time for the Granville Island Brewery Tour! Mayra, Taeko, Toshiya, Shohei, Heiko, Pascal, Sebastian and Loic now know how beer is made. Meredith, our guide, took us on?a tour in the small but efficient brewery and told us all about beer. After the tour we got four tasters but not all that tasty! So from now on if we're drinking a beer we not only know what we're drinking but also how it is made!

We all hope everybody did well on their test and passed!

Somebody else deserved the first star though; Sultan!! Sultan gave a presentation to two classes about the Koran which was very interesting! He deserved to be the star of the week!!

Soccer

Date: Saturday March 11th, 2006
Location: Vancouver

After many requests to organize a soccergame we finally came together?to play. We were lucky because our Saturday afternoon was perfect. The sky was blue, the sun was shining and Micheal was making sure we had some nice music. We played for over an hour with 14 players and we even had?some fans. Look for pictures in the Photo Gallery!!

It was a succes so keep looking at the activity calendar for?when we're playing soccer the next time!

Yesterday we went out for dinner again, this time to La samba. La samba is a Brazilian steakhouse where you pay one price and you can eat whatever you want. LSI took over the restaurant with 17 students!! We ate a crazy amount of food while the band was playing nice South American music. After two hours everybody was done eating and we sat down for another hour or two just to relax and talk to each other.

KOREAN DINNER

Date: Friday February 17th, 2006
Location: Vancouver

Last night Patrick, Nadine, Marco, Chiara, Giacomo, Leonardo, Natascha, Maria, Renato and Juliette went out for dinner to a Korean BBQ restaurant. Many of us had never eaten Korean before in their lives but there's a first time for everything!! Some food looked a little bit weird to European eyes, but we tried everything --?fortunately for us!! We had a great time and the food was delicious! Keep checking the Activity calendar to see where we're going to next time.

ICE SKATING

Date: Monday February 13th, 2006
Location: Vancouver

Last Sunday we went ice skating with a bunch of students. A lot of them had never skated before in their lives, you can say it was a big challenge for them. However, nobody gave up and in the end everybody was able to make a few laps, suprisingly enough nobody fell!! We had a lot of fun and maybe next time we can even try to do some pirouttes and jumps!!
